India has reported at least nine cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) since January 7. Recent outbreaks have shown an increase in HMPV cases across various regions, The first cases were detected in a three-month-old and an eight-month-old baby in Bengaluru, and on the same day, Gujarat reported another case, followed by two cases confirmed in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
Symptoms of HMPV
The symptoms of HMPV can vary in severity and often resemble those of other respiratory infections, such as:
- Cough
- Nasal congestion
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing in severe cases
In some individuals, particularly those with weakened immune systems, the virus can lead to complications like bronchitis or pneumonia. It is essential to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or persist for an extended period.
How to Stay Protected
While there is currently no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment for HMPV, you can take preventive measures to protect yourself and others:
- Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid Close Contact: Stay away from people who are sick and maintain physical distance where possible.
- Disinfect Surfaces: Regularly clean commonly touched surfaces like doorknobs, phones, and keyboards.
- Wear Masks: Especially in crowded places, to reduce exposure to respiratory droplets.
- Boost Immunity: Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep to strengthen your immune system.
Staying informed and adopting these measures can help reduce the risk of HMPV infection. If you or someone you know experiences symptoms, consult a healthcare provider promptly for guidance.
